Integrating the Gender dimension in BOOGIE-U project means incorporating a gender perspective into each I&E initiatives in HEIs as well as in the ecosystem to decrease gender gap and discrimination, increasing inclusion and fostering innovation.

Guidelines for gender-inclusive language in English

Gender-inclusive language is a generic term covering the use of non-sexist and inclusive language. The purpose of gender-inclusive language is to avoid word choices which may be interpreted as biased, discriminatory or demeaning by implying that one sex or social gender is the norm. Using gender-inclusive language also helps reduce gender stereotyping, promotes social change and contributes to achieving gender equality. 

 

Several strategies can be adopted to promote gender equality through language, while writing in a clear and fluid way. In the following guidelines, partners have identified some to be shared throughout the consortium. These recommendations on gender-inclusive language are provided only as guidelines and aren’t meant to censor opinions but rather improve communication.

Resources and tools to promote gender equality within HEIs

Inclusion refers to how diversity is leveraged to create a fair, equitable, healthy, and high-performing organization or community where all individuals are respected, feel engaged and motivated, and their contributions toward meeting organizational and societal goals are valued. The concept of inclusion encompasses all types of diversity, e.g. gender, religion, age, national origin, disability, socioeconomic status, etc. 

On this premise and being aware of the narrowness of this choice, this handbook will focus on the gender dimension only, as stated in the Boogie-U proposal.

Best practises

As effective approaches to gender mainstreaming are available in the EU, it is fundamental to support knowledge building, information exchange and networking among stakeholders. For this purpose, Institut National des Ssciences Aappliquées (INSA) Toulouse and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona shared their initiatives to inspire and serve as a catalyst for the design and dissemination of effective measures in different HEIs, enterprises and working environments.
